Why I Started This Site
Most VPN review sites are written by people who seem to assume you already know what a VPN is and why you need one. They use acronyms without explaining them. They compare technical specs that mean nothing to everyday users. And they almost never address what I think is the most important question: can my father figure this out?
The answer, for most VPN products, is no. The setup is confusing, the apps look like they were designed for 25-year-old gamers, and the support documentation is written in engineer-speak.
Privacy Over 50 exists to answer the questions people my age are actually asking: Does this work for Netflix? Is it safe? Can I set it up on my phone? How much does it actually cost?
My Testing Methodology
Minimum 30 Days Testing
I don't write reviews after a single afternoon. Every VPN I review is tested for at least 30 days as my primary daily VPN.
30+ Speed Tests
I run Ookla Speedtest on AU, UK and US servers at different times of day. I report actual averages, not best-case numbers.
The Dad Test
My father, 79, is the ultimate UX tester. If the setup process confuses him, it loses points. This is non-negotiable.
Weekly Streaming Tests
I test Netflix AU, Netflix US, BBC iPlayer and Disney+ weekly. VPNs that pass one test but fail three months later lose their ranking.
What I Don't Do
- I don't accept payment to rank a VPN higher than it deserves.
- I don't review products I haven't personally tested for at least 30 days.
- I don't invent test results or fabricate speed numbers.
- I don't claim credentials I don't have. I'm a former IT manager, not a cybersecurity expert.
